Windows and how to choose.

One of the best way to improve your home is to replace the windows.  Energy efficiency, curb appeal, easier cleaning and noise reduction are top reasons to replace your old windows. And, just like all my blog posts, I am here to shed some light on the myriad of choices in style and function.

Renovation windows are all made to order. Most companies will send out a technician to measure the existing windows. When the company does not offer this service, you will need to have an installer do the measurements for the order.

Window installers are just that, window installers. They do not repair drywall or trim out the finished window. They will install, secure, and caulk the window. The carpentry work will need to be done by others.

Windows are available in many different styles, let’s explore the most popular!

Single Hung windows have one fixed panel (non-movable) and one panel that opens.

Double-hung windows allow both panels to move. The top panel will slide down and the bottom panel will slide up.

Sliding windows will have one fixed panel and one panel that slides right to left or left to right.

Casement windows are hinged on one side and open out by use of a crank handle.

Awning windows hinge at the top and open out.

Bay windows are framed as a bump out and typically have a seat on the inside below the windows. One fixed center panel and two identical sized operational windows frame it on either side.

Clerestory windows are a style of window with the purpose of adding light to any room.
They are typically mounted close to the ceiling and are fixed but can be used in multiple applications.

Custom windows have endless opportunities to choose from. Pick your shape and size!

Materials

The most common and cost-effective material for replacement and new construction windows is vinyl. Available in all the most popular styles, low maintenance and the best of all, on the higher-priced lines, you will have color choices. Even one color for the inside and another for the outside if you choose. Vinyl windows are also great for keeping clean due to the ease of tilt-sash construction. Tilt-sash allows the window to come out of the frame on 3 sides so you can tilt it down and clean the outside. One downside to vinyl windows is the thickness of the frame.

Aluminum windows have come a long way! No longer the dated multi-pane trailer looks of the 1950s. Modern aluminum windows have much thinner frames than vinyl at a similar cost. Aluminum is available in many factory finished colors, shapes and sizes. The drawback to aluminum is its ability to conduct temperature. The energy performance is lacking in aluminum windows and depending on where you live, may not passcode.

Fiberglass windows will cost a premium but you will get what you pay for.  Mechanically assembled, the finished product is flawless. Take all the positives of aluminum, add energy efficiency and you have the perfect window.

Composite wood windows are made to look like wood but will hold up far better than real wood with little maintenance. For reference, the most common use of composite wood is for decking. Same product, different application. Composite wood can be painted or stained, is energy efficient and is environmentally friendly through the ability to recycle them.

Classic wood windows are beautiful and will instantly add a high-end feel to any home. They require more hand-craftsmanship which does drive the cost up, but this also means they can be created in many shapes and sizes. Staining or painting will help seal out the elements, but wood windows require a lot of maintenance and care. Wood windows are highly efficient as well.

Whichever material type you choose, be sure the manufacture and vendor you purchase them from are reputable. It's never a bad idea to check references too. Window orders will usually require a 50% deposit which can mean a large financial commitment upfront. Measure twice and cut once is a rule of construction. Make sure the windows you are ordering are measured correctly and the size on the order matches the measure!
